Ballast water

Updated on 25/02/2019
Définition
Sens commun
Water contained in large tanks that can correct the trim of the boat and its balance. Ballast water is a problem during the emptying of the tank (deballasting) because species living in one part of the world are released into another zone, creating ecological disturbances. With the growth of international trade, and especially transoceanic maritime transport, problems arise because of this contribution of living organisms foreign to the local environment. Now, biological and chemical treatment systems must treat these volumes of water to limit the exchange of invasive species.

Good environmental status of marine waters (BEE)

Updated on 06/01/2021
Définition
Sens technique

Species

Updated on 19/06/2018
Définition
Sens commun
All individuals which share similar morphological and physiological hereditary characteristics and are able to breed individuals among themselves. Species that look alike but unable to breed among themselves belong to the same genus.

Invasive alien specy

Updated on 07/03/2019
Définition
Sens commun

Exotic species whose introduction by humans, voluntary or fortuitous, on a territory threatens ecosystems, natural habitats or native species with negative ecological, economic and health consequences.

Source
According to french Ministry of Ecological and Solidarity Transition
Sens technique

Species, subspecies or lower rank taxon, introduced outside its natural range, past or present. Introduction or spread threatens biodiversity. The definition includes all parts, seeds, eggs or propagules of species of this type that could survive and reproduce.

Sens réglementaire

According to the European regulation n ° 1143/2014, "an exotic species whose introduction or propagation proves to constitute a threat for the biodiversity and the associated ecosystem services, or to have harmful effects on the biodiversity and the said services".

Flood warning

Updated on 08/04/2020
Définition
Sens commun

Warning issued in advance by the departmental flood forecasting services. In the event of heavy rainfall or hydrological alert, a flood warning is sent to the Prefect, who then alerts the mayors of the catchment areas concerned.

Sens technique

Warning issued in advance by a special state service (flood forecasting service). In the event of a rainfall or hydrological alert (triggering when thresholds are exceeded), the flood forecasting service offers the Prefect the alert of the mayors of the watersheds concerned. As a severe overflow flood, the flood warning service broadcasts, for prefects and mayors, hydrological situation bulletins and information on the evolution of water levels . In 1994, 54 flood warning services monitored 16,000 km of waterways in France using automated measurement networks.

Analysis

Updated on 25/02/2019
Définition
Sens technique

Methodical review allowing both to identify and quantify the different components of water, but also to evaluate its characteristics and state, according to specific criteria. This review is based on the following of specific protocols adapted to the various controlled parameters.

Physico-chemical

Updated on 25/02/2019
Définition
Sens commun

Physical and chemical characteristics of water. Inside a water analysis, the observed parameters are quite numerous, and all of these allow to determine the physical-chemical water quality, which determines the maintenance of river biodiversity. These parameters could be for example, temperature, turbidity, concentration of organic matter, mineral, nitrogen, etc.

Sample

Updated on 13/07/2018
Définition
Sens commun

In the strict sense, it is taking a sample (sampling) for analysis or testing. More generally, water withdrawals include all abstractions related to activities generated by agriculture, industry (including energy), drinking water supply, or others (authorized spring of mineral water, production of artificial snow). In this case, the withdrawals are grouped into 3 subtypes corresponding to the affected environment: surface water withdrawals, groundwater abstractions, seawater withdrawals.
